I just ran the Vista upgrade checkup tool, and it alerted me to the fact that 'Vista drivers may not exist for the Patin Couffin Engine'. I didn't know I had that, but it shows as installed in device manager under VSO devices. The driver is Pcouffin.sys v 1.35. The description is 'Patin-Couffin low level access layer for CD devices'. After some Googling, I gather this is related to software for copying or burning DVDs, from VSO software, but also used in other products. (lots of posts, like this one, asking 'what is it, where does it come from?'

I'm just wondering what installed it. The only possibly related software I have currently installed is EMC 8.

I have occasionally installed other DVD copying software and file converters to try them out but have (as far as I can tell) uninstalled them all. If it isn't part of Roxio, maybe one of those didn't uninstall the Patin Couffin engine. If so would it be safe to uninstall it in device manager? Obviously I don't want to break anything in EMC 8.

Any information would be welcome. I just ran the Vista upgrade checkup tool, and it alerted me to the fact that 'Vista drivers may not exist for the Patin Couffin Engine'. Obviously I don't want to break anything in EMC 8. Any information would be welcome. I'm pretty sure it's part of Divx to DVD which is a VSO product. I don't think you'll find it listed separately in the control panel as an app if it was installed as part of the EMC8 app. If you installed a separate version from VSO, then it would show up. Or maybe not.

I just noticed that date stamps of pcouffin.sys and the.inf file that installed it correspond to when I downloaded and installed Magic DVD copier and tried it out copying a couple of DVDs with it.Since uninstalled. It's likely VSO is involved with many other similar packages.

Sometimes when you uninstall a program you'll see it ask if you want to remove a possible shared dll and if you do, another program may not work. It's possible each of the companies mentioned has licensed part of their program from VSO. If you remove it, you can always do a repair install in EMC to get it back.I hope!
